The model railroad club Zistersdorf operates this layout with 1 MX1 HS, 22 MX9, and one MX21. They run STP on 2 PCs with 3 displays. The Members claim that at this size even with professionally skilled operators it would not be possible to run over 40 trains simultaneously without the help of STP.
